Dining in Sarasota — The No-BS Restaurant Guide

  • Apr 7
  • 3 min read

Sarasota's restaurant scene doesn't need hype. It needs a guide that actually tells you where to eat based on what you're in the mood for, not what paid for a sponsored post. This is that guide. No rankings bought, no opinions for sale. Just a local wine bar's honest take on the best dining in Sarasota.

Sarasota Dining by Neighborhood

The Rosemary District

The city's most exciting food neighborhood. Independent restaurants, no chains, walkable. Start at Vino Bistro for wine and tapas, then explore Station 400, The Rosemary, Sage, and more. Read our full Rosemary District guide for the deep dive.

Downtown Sarasota (Main Street)

The classic Sarasota dining corridor. Selva Grill for Peruvian-inspired cuisine. Mattison's City Grille for outdoor dining on Main Street. Indigenous for farm-to-table creativity. Owen's Fish Camp for Southern seafood with personality. This strip has the widest range of cuisines and price points in the city.

St. Armands Circle

The tourist-friendly dining destination on the way to Lido Beach. Columbia Restaurant for Spanish-Cuban classics. Shore for seafood with a view. Tommy Bahama for the tropical vibe. St. Armands is more polished and pricier than downtown — great for visitors, less frequented by locals.

Gulf Gate & Siesta Key

Casual, beach-adjacent dining. Siesta Key Oyster Bar (SKOB) for the quintessential Florida bar experience. The Old Salty Dog for waterfront hot dogs and cold beer. Gulf Gate has quieter neighborhood gems worth seeking out.

Sarasota Restaurants by Occasion

Date night: Vino Bistro (wine + tapas + live music in a converted theater), Selva Grill (elegant Peruvian), or Sage (contemporary fine dining). Read our full date night guide for more ideas.

Pre-show dinner: If you're heading to Van Wezel or Westcoast Black Theatre, the Rosemary District is your best bet. We wrote guides for both — restaurants near Van Wezel and restaurants near Westcoast Black Theatre.

Group dinner: Tapas restaurants work brilliantly for groups because everyone shares everything. Vino Bistro's menu was designed for this. For larger parties, ask about our private event space.

Happy hour: Read our happy hour in Sarasota guide for the spots that actually deliver.

Casual with live music: Vino Bistro (Tuesday jazz, Friday/Saturday bands), The Blue Rooster (blues/rock), Mattison's (patio music). See our live music guide.

Sarasota Restaurants by Cuisine

Italian/Mediterranean: Vino Bistro (wine bar + Italian-leaning tapas), Clasico Italian Chophouse (upscale Italian), Cafe L'Europe (classic European).

Tapas & small plates: Vino Bistro is Sarasota's dedicated tapas and wine experience. Read our tapas in Sarasota guide.

Seafood: Owen's Fish Camp, Marina Jack, Walt's Fish Market, Shore.

American/Southern: The Blue Rooster, State Street Eating House, Indigenous.

Asian: Pacific Rim, Drunken Poet Cafe (Thai), various sushi spots along Gulf Gate and downtown.

Advice for Snowbirds and First-Time Visitors

If you're visiting Sarasota during peak season (November through April), three things to know: reservations matter, the Rosemary District is where the locals eat, and St. Armands is where the tourists eat. Both are fine — but if you want the real Sarasota dining experience, head to the Rosemary District or downtown.

Also: don't skip the wine scene. Sarasota has a surprisingly deep wine culture, and places like Vino Bistro make it accessible whether you're a casual drinker or a serious collector. Read our wine bars in Sarasota guide for the full picture.

This city punches above its weight when it comes to food. From neighborhood wine bars in converted theaters to world-class fine dining on the bayfront, Sarasota has more good restaurants per capita than most cities twice its size. The hardest part is choosing where to go tonight.

Start at Vino Bistro in the Rosemary District — wine, tapas, live music, and a space unlike anything else in town. Make a reservation and discover why the Rosemary District is where Sarasota goes to eat.
